Gillian Hulse

Biography

I trained in both graphics and textile design at Camberwell School of Art (now the University of the Arts London) and started my working life as an archaeological illustrator in Canterbury making scale drawings of small finds for publication.

When our daughters Katy and Holly came along I worked as an illustrator of children's and educational books and wrote and published a picture book called "Morris Where Are You?" featuring Katy and our half Siamese cat Morris. I also had the opportunity to illustrate a series of stories for BBC 1's "Jackanory" series about a delightful character called Daisy Pig, the tales were very entertainingly read by comedian Dawn French.

Prior to our move from Kent to Somerset in 2004, I visited Tudely church in Kent to study the beautiful stained-glass windows by Marc Chagall. It was this visit that first inspired me to learn more about working with glass. Following short courses in stained and fused glass, I began to make experimental pieces at home, firing them in my husband Phil's ceramic kiln.

In 2009 I was fortunate enough to be able to establish a purpose-built studio in our garden, which means I have more space to develop my ideas.

I am now a full member of the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen and exhibit in their gallery in Somerton as well as other outlets and galleries mainly in the South West.
